Tesla remembers Powerwall 2 over battery fire risk

Tesla has issued a recall for its Powerwall 2 battery units sold between November 2020 and June 2022 over a potential risk of battery fire.

When it comes to Tesla, we are used to seeing the recall of vehicles, but now we learn about a recall of Powerwall 2, the company’s popular home battery package.

Tesla has received several reports of battery cells that fail in Powerwall 2 devices, leading to some fires.

The company wrote in a recall message in Australia:

Tesla has identified certain lithium-ion battery cells from a third-party provider in a subgroup of Powerwall 2 systems that can fail and overheat. Tesla has received reports of Powerwall 2 devices with the affected battery cells that smoke or emit flames, resulting in minor property damage.

Tesla says Powerwall 2 battery units sold between November 2020 and June 2022 are subject to the recall.

The company is already remotely discharged the affected powerwalls to reduce the risk:

Most affected devices have already been distant derived from Tesla. While the risk of overheating is now very low if it occurs, it can lead to a fire that can cause serious damage, death or damage to property. A few incidents have occurred and caused damage to property. No damage has been reported.

Powerwall owners should check their Tesla app to see if their device is affected. In that case, Powerwall will probably already be discharged.

Tesla says it will replace their powerwalls affected with new ones at no cost to customers. It is also considering compensating people for lost revenue or higher bills due to Powerwalls being down for a long period of time, but it has not confirmed anything yet.

The company has not yet released a recall message outside Australia, but Tesla produces all its powerwalls in Nevada, USA.

It is unclear whether the problem only affected Powerwalls sent to Australia or whether the recall should be expanded.

The recall message mentions that the product was sold internationally and not just in Australia.

I know Tesla has adapted Powerwall to different markets, so it is possible that the recall is specifically for Australia, but it doesn’t make much sense if the problem is really the battery cell.

If Powerwall affected units were those made between November 2020 and June 2022, these battery cells probably went into Powerwall 2 devices sent to other markets.

My own powerwalls were produced during this period and I have not received any message yet, but I live in an incredibly underrated market for Tesla Energy. My Powerwall installers came from a province over.

I keep an eye on this.
