The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has wrapped up a number of public hearings on SpaceX’s proposal to launch its Super Heavy Starship Rocket from NASAS Kennedy Space Center (KSC).
The sessions, which are held both personally and online, form part of the draft environmental impact declaration (EIS) review that will determine if SpaceX would be cleared to implement Starship launches and landings from Florida’s Space Coast.
FAA Review and Starship launch plans
According to the FAA’s draft EIS, SpaceX is seeking permission to fly its fully recyclable star ship from Launch Complex 39a, where the construction of a dedicated tower and infrastructure has already begun. Suggested operations could involve landings on KSC or Droneship located across the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean. FAA emphasized that the final approval is not guaranteed with the implementation of EIS, as security and financial requirements must still be met, as noted in a Space.com report.
Starship’s larger scale compared to Falcon 9 means extended exclusion zones for air, sea and beach access. The analysis also projected more than 60 annual closures of Playalinda Beach along with potential flight delays in Florida airports lasting 40 minutes to two hours. Port Canaveral would also be affected by maritime restrictions.
Local concerns
Public comments reflected a mixture of optimism and turmoil. Aviation officials, such as Tampa International Airport Coo John Tiliacos, warned of significant disruption of commercial flights. “There is the potential that there will be a significant impact on commercial aviation and the traveler public. It is something that a few certainly needs to consider and frankly come up with a plan to mitigate,” he said.
Others raised health concerns and noted that chronic sleep disorder from launch noise could affect veterans and trauma survivors. Robyn Memphis, a student of neuroscience and psychology, said that sleep disorders from launch noise and sonic booms could have lasting effects. “Chronic sleep disorder is not only inconvenient. This is directly linked to depression, anxiety … heart -vessel disease, even suicide risk. And when we are in Florida, we have many veterans and trauma survivors in society,” she said.
Nudist protests and answers
Erich Schuttauf, CEO of the American Association for Nude Recreation, also argued that places like Playalinda Beach, a nudist beach, are crucial to people traveling to places where public nudity is legal. His feelings were repeated by colleague Nudist Sue Stevens, who noticed that “it is probably a quarter of a million people traveling and thinking as I do that look after destinations that are beautiful and surrounded by like -minded people.”
Photographer Max West, who plans to move to Florida to photograph Starship, noted that the spacecraft is presenting a remarkable step forward to humanity. And while its influence on the local communities is not marginal, they are the progress it offers it is worth it. “I don’t want to say that there is zero environmental impact there,” he said, though he also said there must be some “small victims along the way.” The turtles and nudists will have to migrate. These are the costs you have to pay for this incredible thing that happens. ”
