VW advises customers to be a little more patient with Tesla SuperCharger access as it claims to experience technical problems.
The German brand is the last to give SuperCharger access to its North American EV owners.
Tesla first announced the opening of its SuperCharger network to other electric vehicles in 2021, but the rollout has been slow.
The car manufacturer successfully persuaded the rest of the North American automotive industry to adopt its connectors as the new standard. It struck appointments with them to access its Supercharger network, which is by far the best and most reliable quick-charging EV network in North America, making the deal sweetened.
However, the transition was not exactly smooth.
Last year, Elon Musk Tesla fired the entire charging team, which had built the world’s best charging network, over a dispute with the team’s head. Tesla ended up having to restore some of the staff, and other carmakers admitted that this was slowing the SuperCharger integration process.
Nevertheless, integration began to be completed this year, with electric vehicles from almost all other car manufacturers now having access to most Tesla Superchargers in North America.
However, there is a major exception: VW electric vehicles, specifically ID.4 and ID Buzz.
Last week, Porsche and Audi, both of which are part of the Volkswagen group, announced that their North American EV owners now have access to the SuperCharger network.
This made people think that VW should not be too far behind.
VW has now commented on meeting “technical challenges” and has asked owners for their patience. The German car manufacturer still believes that access should come by the end of the year (via PC MAG):
“Volkswagen is looking forward to enabling ID. Buzz and ID.4 Vehicle Owners to access Tesla NACS -Partner Superchargers. The timeline has been delayed by technical challenges and we ask for customers’ patience. We still expect to deliver access this year.”
It is unclear what these technical challenges are, but VW has experienced infamous software questions for years now.
Recently, the company decided to collaborate with Rivian for help with the software side.
